We are all guilty of buying products that have ingredients that aren't good us. Here is a list of ingredient to try and avoid.

  • Coal Tar- used in dry skin treatments, anti-dandruff and anti-lice shampoos.
  • 1,4-dioxane- by product made from adding carcinogenic ethylene oxide to make other chemicals less harsh.
  • Formaldehyde
  • Fragrance/Parfum- is a cover up for harsh chemicals.
  • Lead
  • Mercury
  • Oxybenzone- active ingredient in chemical sunscreen.
  • Parabens
  • Polyethylene Gylcol (PEG)- often contaminated with 1,4-diozane and ethylene oxide.
  • Emollients
  • Talc

Whether you are walking the makeup aisle at the drug store or your local department store it is important to know what you are buying. Familiarizing yourself with brands and knowing what major company is helping to produce your favorite products is key.

  • Cruelty Free Bunny symbol- PETA-no animals were harmed in the making of the product.
  • Leaping Bunny-product has not been tested on animals
  • The Open Flame symbol- flammable
  • Triangle made of 3 ribbon arrows- recyclable
  • The Vegan Heart- Vegan, contains no animal products, nor tested on animals.
  • The "NSF"- means the product is at least 70% organic.
  • The 'e'- the lowercase e is found on products that stand true to amount of product. The estimated sign.
  • POA-Period after opening. A cosmetic jar with a number like 12M means 12 month shelf life.
